Ted Vickerman's
Repair & Re-finishing Course

French Polishing is an essential skill for every craftsperson and this two day, introductory course, aims to cover various aspects of this complex craft. Plenty of practical work still leaves time for discussion and problem solving.

TUTOR: Ted Vickerman
Ted has a wealth of experience from starting as an apprentice cabinet maker/polisher to setting up and runninga family repairing and restoring business in 1965. Not only is Ted a hands on expert but is experienced in passing on these skills to students having tutored at local evening classes. With infinite patience and a wealth of knowledge, Ted is the ideal tutor. He strongly believes in a practical hands on approach.

Should Ted at any time be unavailable, another tutor of similar calibre will conduct the course.

Course Day
The course starts at 9.00 am and finishes at approximately 4.30 pm each day. Lunch and refreshment breaks take place in line with the course schedule.

Course Content
This two day course, devoted predominantly to French Polishing, will suit the absolute beginner or the more experienced polisher and gives the student an opportunity to learn the skills required and to put them into practice on their own items of furniture. Students may bring along antiques, more recent pieces or newly made items. A couple of pieces are normally required, eg a chair and a small table. Try and ensure that the furniture you bring along is of different style and timber, to give you an opportunity to practice the different skills of French Polishing. No experience is required to achieve good results, if you have tried to French Polish before and have encountered problems, Edward will help you to solve them.The course will allow you to polish new items or strip and re-polish pieces of furniture in poor condition.

Areas that will be covered are:
• Stripping and timber preparation
• Stains, types available, when and how to use them
• Sealing
• Making and maintaining a rubber, rubbering
• The use of polishing mops • Colouring
• Bodying up and finishing off

Ted will explain the reasons for doing tasks in specific ways and will entertain you with anecdotes from his vast experience as a polisher.
The course is very practical in its basis, as Edward believes in learning by experience, so be sure to bring along old clothes to work in. An apron and rubber gloves will be supplied for you. Please don’t forget that the aim of the course is enjoyment in learning a fascinating skill. Other skills, such as liming, distressing, the use of modern lacquers etc., can be discussed and experimented with.
