Chair caning came to England in the 17th Century, when
Charles II was given a chair containing cane panels which
had been imported by the East India Company. The craft
was learned by English craftsmen and has been in and out
of fashion ever since. At present it appears to be enjoying
a revival. Many people have a treasured chair which they
would like to restore and this course is designed as an
introduction to the enjoyable craft of caning.
